The Well-
What is the Well?
The Well is the worship experience of the SMU Wesley Foundation every Wednesday night at 8pm upstairs at the Wesley House.
What happens at the Well?
Every week is a bit different, but generally we sing songs to God, read and teach from God’s Word, pray, and take Holy Communion together. Our desire is that we would experience God at the Well and be transformed by Him as we follow Jesus in community in the world.
What is the meaning of the name “The Well?”
In John’s Gospel, Jesus is tired from a long journey and takes a rest in a Samaritan village called Sychar. In this village, he reclines at an ancient well that belonged to a great Jewish ancestor named Jacob. Around noon a woman from Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus speaks to the woman- which broke cultural and religious norms of the day- and asks if she would give him a drink of water. A conversation ensues. In the midst of the dialogue, Jesus uncovers this woman’s pain, disappointment, and failures. But, then the unimaginable happens. Jesus offers this woman a drink of water. Not just every-day, ordinary water you drink, but living water, spiritual water. Jesus says about this water is so refreshing that when we drink it, we will never be thirsty again. The woman’s life is transformed by God simply because she showed up at the well that day. Our prayer is that “The Well” will be a worship experience where students’ needs and the presence of God meet one another.
